i am. sad

okay, so i am going to preface this post by saying that the event i will be describing did not come as a shock to me or my brothers. the purpose is to possibly get some advice or hear some stories from those of you who have gone through a similar situation.

with that being said, my parents told me on wednesday that they are OFFICIALLY getting a divorce after 25 years of being married. i say officially because, as my brother, joe, said so perfectly, “the way i see it, they have been divorced for over a year.” anyway, when they started figuring out the logistics, it became real & has been kinda weird. in order to understand its impact (which its immensity came as a surprise to me), i began to start journaling a lot more than normal.

& it has helped. ive noticed quite a few things that are helping me through this:

1. although i have lived with both of my parents my entire life, i don’t know their history &, since I’m not there when its just the two of them (duh), i cant quite say exactly what caused this split.
2. i am not, nor are my brothers, to blame (this sounds so cliché, but whateves)
3. just because they had relationship issues, doesn’t mean that i wont be able to maintain a relationship in the future. their path, regardless of how closely tied i am to them, does not determine mine. & on that note…
4. i can learn from their mistakes. i can hear out both of my parents to see what bothered them the most & keep that in mind throughout my life in dating and marriage.

so ya, although this situation isn’t the absolute best, i think the whole family will be better off in the long run. i have the ability to learn and grow from every low & you bet i will be taking advantage of that.

if youre willing to help me out & share, i would appreciate it! i just want to know how you’ve dealt with divorced parents & how your life has changed because of it.
